Mary and the Slingshot

Mary and the Slingshot

Dec 29, 2019

Preacher: Rev. Ken Collins

Today we welcomed Rev. Ken Collins, a retired Disciples of Christ minister, to our pulpit. He used the story of the Annunciation of Jesus’ birth to Mary by an angel as his starting point to show us how her life, full of exhilarating high points and deep setbacks, is a model for how we can live in God’s love. God holds us close when things are bad and rejoices with us in love when they are good. God is always with us, as God was always with Mary. At the end of the service, Rev. Collins referred back to his sermon with this blessing” Life is hard, and that’s the point, and when it is over, we are glad— But Jesus who raised Himself from the dead, can raise us up as well. And He will say to you: “I love you with all of my heart and mind and Spirit, With everything I am and have and ever shall be. I loved you before you were formed in your mother’s womb, And I will love you when your voice is stilled in death. And when all the catastrophes of this universe are but a fond remembrance in the furthest corner of my mind, And all the stars are dust— I will love you and I will live with you and you with me forever more." Life is like a slingshot, setback after setback, after setback So emulate Mary in everything you do: Let God be the Father of all you conceive, Let God be the Son of all of your labor, And let God be the Spirit who leads you into all truth. May the blessing of our Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be with you now, and as you leave this place, and forevermore.
